All-Day/Half-Day Kindergarten FAQsback to top
Is Johnston offering both all-day/half-day kindergarten next year?
Johnston will offer all-day kindergarten for all who request an all-day placement. Parents desiring a half-day placement may request placement in a half-day section. Half-day kindergarten will be offered as enrollment warrants. Half-day kindergarten sections may not be offered in all elementary buildings if enrollment does not warrant. The district will offer a one-year placement for half-day kindergarten in another elementary, which has half-day classroom space availability.  A student attending a non-attendance boundary elementary for half-day kindergarten will return to their attendance boundary elementary after their kindergarten year. The location and number of half-day sections will be based on enrollment numbers, geographic location of sections, and transportation routes.

Why isn't all-day kindergarten being offered "across the board"?
Not all parents are interested in the all-day option. The Johnston School Board and administration have implemented a plan to provide all-day kindergarten for all who request. This provides parents with choice. The district will monitor the success of the program through student achievement data, staff input, and parental surveys.

How do I indicate which program I want for my child?
All kindergarten parents will be asked to complete a program preference form that will list programming options. In addition to this form, parents will be asked to complete additional registration forms including medical/contact information and financial status form if applicable. If a parent meets financial guidelines comparable to guidelines for free and reduced lunch, a financial status form should also be submitted in August for consideration for the waiving of student fees.

Who do I contact if I have additional questions?
You may contact your building principal:
Eric Toot, Beaver Creek, 278-6228
Tim Salmon, Horizon, 986-1121
Trisha Lenarz-Garmoe, Lawson, 278-0478
